If you came here looking for an easy way to get rich without effort then you have come to the wrong place. There is no doubt that affiliate marketing is a great way to make money online, but it’s not easy, and it’s not for everyone. The challenges of affiliate marketing are the same as any other business. You need a combination of knowledge, time and hard work to be successful.
The competition for the online dollar has increased with every major retail chain involved and reaching out for their piece of the pie. Google has over 50 billion web pages indexed and there are millions of new blog posts written everyday.
How can the small online marketer even hope to be seen these days?
Well, the good news is that in the online world, not only has the competition increased, so has the volume of people that buy online. Another positive is that with affiliate marketing, you can share in the success of these giant retailers by becoming an affiliate and selling their products.
That’s the beauty of affiliate marketing, you don’t need your own inventory, you don’t need to worry about the financial transactions and you don’t need to deal with merchandise returns or customer complaints. It really is a great online business to be in, if of course, you can overcome some of the following challenges.
Success Takes Time
Is there a business out there in brick and mortar land that succeeds overnight? Of course not, and the cost is a lot higher than starting a business online. The number one reason that entrepreneurs fail in the online business is that they quit before they make it.
One of my affiliate marketing websites is a skin care related niche. Looking at hundreds of different products makes you soon realize that a lot of them are made with the same ingredients. My advice to those trying to get rid of acne is the same as I will give to affiliate marketers. Pick a course of action and stick with it until it works.
Those that suffer from acne want it gone so badly that they become impatient with a product and go from treatment to treatment without giving any of them the time that they need to work. It’s the same deal with unsuccessful online marketers. They bounce from shiny thing to new shiny thing hoping for a magic formula, or a push button system that brings them success and riches. Don’t do that!
Patience is the key to any long term business success. Don’t keep running around spending money on marketing products and systems that promise immediate and easy success. You will end up broke and disappointed.
Carve Your Own Niche
Don’t do what everybody else is doing. Find a niche or topic that you have an interest in and build a customer base. The slow and steady way to build a following is to write blogs and product reviews. One of the biggest challenges in affiliate marketing is the actual writing of material. For some it comes naturally and is enjoyable. Even if that is the case, writing is still the most time consuming part of any online business.
The writing challenge is not insurmountable, and if you are not comfortable writing your own content, there are ways to make it easier. You can always pay to have articles written for you. As a matter of fact, once you get going, it is sometimes beneficial to farm out a lot of your workload. There are a so many time consuming aspects of running an online business that sometimes it makes more sense to pay others to do it for you. This gives you more time to concentrate on the things in your business that you enjoy more, or are better at doing.
Working From Home Requires Discipline
Working from home is a major benefit of having your own online business. It is also the biggest challenge when it comes to being successful. It takes a specific mindset to have enough discipline to get things done on your own. Sure, no more boss, no more commute and no more co-workers. It seems like heaven when you imagine it. The reality is that without the structure of a work environment some of us find it hard to get anything done. Motivating yourself is not always easy and the best thing that you can do is to develop a system of time management and stick to it.
- Get dressed like you are going to work.
- Have a separate work area.
- Start at a specific time and don’t get sidetracked.
- Work on a schedule. Take periodic breaks where you get up and walk around.
- Check emails and stats only at designated times. The same for goes for social media.
- Have a to do list and bing it off, starting with the things that you don’t want to do.
- Baby steps. Always be doing something that contributes to your business.
- Learning is working. A part of your day should be reading or watching videos that relate to your business. Just not all the time. Knowledge without action will not help your business.
Don’t Spread Yourself Too Thin
It is very possible to make a living with only one affiliate marketing website. I found out the hard way (as usual,) that if you spread yourself too thin, it’s hard to maintain quality. If you are a one man operation, which is the case when you are starting out, there are only 24 hours in a day. If you are trying to run 5 websites, it’s just not possible to do it properly.
One at a time, patience, again, is the key. Scale up and start a new project only after the one you’re doing is up and running smoothly and is profitable. It’s the same for affiliate programs. You don’t need to join them all. It’s better to join only a couple of them and that way you will get paid quicker. In a lot of cases there is a minimum payout threshold and if you are making minimal sales, spread out among different affiliate programs, it will take longer to get paid. It’s better to try and get more sales from one program. Commission Junction, Deal Guardian, Clickbank and others all have multiple companies within them that will provide you with lots of affiliate product choices. Pick one or two and stick with them. If you choose to sell physical products, then you will have the choice of millions of them, just by joining the Amazon affiliate program.
